Physical Education
At Riverside Primary School, we aim to provide an engaging and inspiring P.E curriculum that promotes our core value ‘Ancora Imparo’ - ‘I am still learning’.
Through a high quality physical education curriculum we aim to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sport that inspires all children to succeed and be supported in achieving a healthy lifestyle.
We strive to provide our pupils with a wide range of physical experiences including competition, which builds and develops positive character traits including respect and fairness.
Intent
To provide a high quality physical education for all children.
To ensure that children have a positive attitude to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
To develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so that they can perform with increasing confidence and competence.
To provide opportunities for our children to compete in sporting activities that improve their health and fitness, builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.
Key features of our curriculum
To develop the children emotionally, physically and socially through physical activity so that children can identify how sport and fitness can play a significant role within everyday lifestyles.
To stimulate and empower every child, both individually and a heart part of a team, to realise their potential.
To develop the children’s skills and competence so that they can have the confidence to challenge themselves and to compete against others in an atmosphere of respect and fairness.
To provide a curriculum that is fun and that creates enthusiastic learners who enjoy taking part in sporting activities.
Implementation
Each child receives weekly P.E lessons, which are planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills, and activities are covered. In EYFS and KS1, a specialist sports coach and the class teacher deliver by the class teacher and in KS2 lessons.
As part of the EYFS framework pupils are taught physical development, involving providing opportunities for young children to be active and interested and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity to make healthy choices in relation to food.
Moving and handling: Children show good co-ordination and control in large and small movements.
They move confidently in a range of ways safely negotiating space. They handle equipment effectively.
Health and self-care: Children are taught the importance of good health, physical exercise and a healthy diet and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.
Key Stage 1
Pupils develop fundamental skills becoming increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination individually and with others. They are able to engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils are taught to:
· Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination and begin to apply these in a range of activities. These to include gymnastics and movement, games skills, tag rugby, football, athletics and striking games.
· Participate in team games developing skills and team tactics, respect for others and fairness.
· Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key Stage 2
Pupils have access to a specialist P.E coach to continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in team games and in gymnastics sequences. They enjoy communicating collaborating and competing against each other and further develop their understanding of how to improve their performance in a wider range of physical activities and sports.
Pupils are taught to:
· Use running, throwing and jumping in isolation and combinations.
· Play competitive games such as football, cricket, rounder’s, hockey, netball, tag rugby and volleyball applying basic principles of tactics, attacking and defending and respect and fairness.
· Perform dances and gymnastic sequences, using a range of movement patterns, developing their flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
· Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities as part as the Year 6 Residential visit.
· Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Swimming
Each year group in KS2 will attend swimming lessons yearly.
· Years 3/4- 5 ½ hour lessons
· Years 5/6 -10 ½ hour lessons
In addition to P.E in curriculum time, we provide opportunities for children to access extra curriculum sessions, which include football, netball, judo, tennis and tag rugby.
During playtimes, each class has access to a sports equipment box so that they can further develop their skills and initiate their own small games. The lunchtime assistants organise this opportunity with support from teaching staff.
Internal/External Competitions
There are many opportunities across the year for children to take part in internal and external competitions. We have for many years organised a local football league and a netball competition that has included teams from Liverpool, we have regularly entered Wirral based sporting competitions.
Each year we organise our own tournaments, which include gymnastics, tennis and a swimming gala. Our Riverside Football Premier League runs throughout the year and is very successful in giving children a wide range of abilities and the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
